I felt the need to post here.

That and I was wondering...have most of y'all taken voice lessons? I'm kind of toying with the idea, but curious on how much they help, cost, etc. Because I don't wanna be an opera star or anything, but I would like a stronger voice. And I have always assumed my REAL place in life is as a Broadway star(haha). Anyhoo, figured someone here would know! *L*

Woot! I'm new! [15 Oct 2004|10:57pm]

broadwaybabe451
[ mood | bitchy ]

1. Name? Laura
2. General Location?: Milwaukee, WI
3) Age?: 19
4) What part do you sing and what type of singer are you?: I sing 2nd soprano, and i have a very versatile voice (ex. I both belt out show tunes and sing opera, along with singing gospel and pop)
5) Favorite opera of all time?: Probably Carmen
6) Favorite aria to sing?: Ummm i haven't sung many arias....but i'd probably would have to say 'pie jesu', if that counts

7) Dream role?: Millie from 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'

8) Where do you go to school/work?: Work and go to school at Marquette University

9) What are you eating for dinner tomorrow?: Probably dorm food

10) Best male singer?: As of now...Clay Aiken. I love his voice...it's so soulful.

11) Female?: I don't really have a favorite....maybe sutton foster? or someone else..i can't remember

12) Worst male? Oh god....George Huff...definately George Huff *shudder*

13) Worst female? Hilary Duff.....omg, she CAN'T SING!!

14) What do you think is an appropriate age to begin training classically, and what age (if singer has started "early") is an appropriate age to begin performing?
I always think that earlier is better, i'd probably say around 8-10ish to begin training, and start performing around age 13 or so....but keep in mind, i've never had any professional training...my voice is 100% natural :)

15) Do you notice that aspects of your environment, diet, lifestyle, or mood affect your singing? If so, what?:
...one lesson i have learned well...never EVER EVER eat easy mac right before a choir audition....BAD idea

16) As singers, we are reproducing words and music often hundreds of years old. How does that make you feel when you're standing up in front of an audience or microphone and such a responsibility is resting on your shoulders?:
It's an exhilarating feeling, really, and being able to preserve that tradition is what keeps my love of singing and music alive.

17) What is the worst song you've ever been made to sing or have done yourself that you can't believe that you attempted to do?:
I've been made to sing that god awful song my senior year of high school: 'We Will Light the Fire Within'....well all wanted to light the song on fire!

18) What's the hardest technical issue you've had to work through?:
Mostly nerves...i used to be very shy about my singing.

19) If opera suddenly stopped, what other kind of music would you like to sing?: Even if opera never stopped, show tunes all the way. I'm a champion belter ;)

20) What is the worst stage experience you have ever had, and your best?:
Worst- Oh god....i can't even remember. I think maybe one time when i almost tripped over myself in the aisle...

Best-- Either when i played Eulalie in 'The Music Man', or when I belted out 'When You're Good to Mama' in front of 500 people

That's about it!!

Continuing the survey...I'm new, btw [25 Sep 2004|08:34pm]

sfnationalist
1. Name? David
2. General Location?: Northern California
3) Age?: 14
4) What part do you sing and what type of singer are you?:
Boy Soprano ~ discriminated against for too long...
5) Favorite opera of all time?: La Nozze di Figaro
6) Favorite aria to sing?: The Queen of the Night's aria from The Magic Flute (just because I can hit the high F!

7) Dream role?: No idea...

8) Where do you go to school/work?: High School

9) What are you eating for dinner tomorrow?: I don't have a clue

10) Best male singer?: Juan Diego Florez

11) Female?: I like Lea Solonga, mainly cause she's a fellow Philippine islander...

12) Worst male? Any Boy band singers... BLEAH!

13) Worst female? Probably someone like Britney Spears, along those lines...

14) What do you think is an appropriate age to begin training classically, and what age (if singer has started "early") is an appropriate age to begin performing?
I don't know...as long as the person isn't pressured too much. It should be an enjoyable experience. If a parent forces their kids into something, it won't be fun.

15) Do you notice that aspects of your environment, diet, lifestyle, or mood affect your singing? If so, what?:
Popcorn is terrible! In a calming setting, like on a beach among the stars at night is great for singing.

16) As singers, we are reproducing words and music often hundreds of years old. How does that make you feel when you're standing up in front of an audience or microphone and such a responsibility is resting on your shoulders?:

It's really a philosophical question. It's really great to see music's beauty preserved. If it isn't, then it ruins the whole thing, with the composer probably rolling in his/her grave.

17) What is the worst song you've ever been made to sing or have done yourself that you can't believe that you attempted to do?: Backstreet Boys. Obviously I was pressured. But it's a good novelty song, like Britney Spears.

18) What's the hardest technical issue you've had to work through?:
Trying to sing when sick! It's terrible, and also when you're singing in a choir, when the guys all around you are just a little bit off. I hate that!

19) If opera suddenly stopped, what other kind of music would you like to sing?: Some good musical theatre, without people that can't sing...

20) What is the worst stage experience you have ever had, and your best?:
Worst- Haven't had many bad things happen, but in the solo below, I goofed it up in front of judges, and came in about 2 beats too early. Luckily enough, it didn't affect the score, and the judges obviously didn't hear it.

Best-- A huge solo of some hebrew song, "Shiru L'adonai", performed in front of about 250 or 300 people, after beating out the rest of my choir for it, including people that had seniority!

1. Name? Colleen
2. General Location?: USA
3) Age?: 14
4) What part do you sing and what type of singer are you?:
Im a soprano, and i sing lots of stuff, i enjoy singing alot of things. I love musical theater, and the 26 italian songs and ariahs, they are all gouregous(sp??)
5) Favorite opera of all time?: ive never really seen one.....
6) Favorite aria to sing?: Se tu m'aime

7) Dream role?: Tracy in Hairspray, or Serena in Fame

8) Where do you go to school/work?: high school on the East Coast

9) What are you eating for dinner tomorrow?: who knows?

10) Best male singer?: Either Josh Groban or Anthony Rapp
11) Female?: Idina Menzel

12 & 13) Worst?: o god, im not huge simple plan fan.

14) What do you think is an appropriate age to begin training classically, and what age (if singer has started "early") is an appropriate age to begin performing?
Well, i cant really talk because i started voice lessons when i was 10. But i had a great teacher who only did light singing and mostly working on breath stuff, and sight singing. We never did anything that could have hurt me. So it all depends on how fast you have developed. But if you dont want to chance ANYTHING then 13 is a good age.
15) Do you notice that aspects of your environment, diet, lifestyle, or mood affect your singing? If so, what?:
Well, obveously milk is bad. But i find if I drink too much water its gross too. Also, if i know people in the audience that i feel comforable with i often sing to them, but i love it when the lights are down and you cant see the audience but the audience can see you, and you can just listen to the laughter or clapping, or crying....
16) As singers, we are reproducing words and music often hundreds of years old. How does that make you feel when you're standing up in front of an audience or microphone and such a responsibility is resting on your shoulders?: Ive never really thought of it that way...
17) What is the worst song you've ever been made to sing or have done yourself that you can't believe that you attempted to do?: Of course. I mean, when your younger and in chours the teachers dont really expect much from you, so you sing songs about pizza...

18) What's the hardest technical issue you've had to work through?:
Probably working through my brake. Its a newer issue, and im working on it, its not really a HUGE thing, its just that i have recently discovered my belting voice, so i dont know how to control it.
19) If opera suddenly stopped, what other kind of music would you like to sing?:Musical theater

20) What is the worst stage experience you have ever had, and your best?: Worst- A broadway revue where i forgot my words and then ran backwards and fell on stage
Best-- A vocal recial that i did about two weeks ago, i was proud. =)

I'm a newbie and decided that the survey was a good idea ^^ [05 May 2004|09:57pm]

svz_insanity
This seems like a great survey, and on-topic, so I wanna play! *G*

1. Name? Stacy

2. General Location?: Central NY state

3) Age?: 14

4) What part do you sing and what type of singer are you?: I'm an alto and I pretty much sing pop/jazz. I want to get a less "poppy" voice but I think I'm stuck with it... think of my voice as a more of a less talented, jazzy and low Christina Aguilera.
5) Favorite opera of all time?: Aida ^^ Then again, this is the only I've heard and it was only once... I've seen the musical and liked it better...
6) Favorite aria to sing?: ... I don't know any. ^^' *blushes*

7) Dream role?: Eponine from Les Miserables

8) Where do you go to school/work?:... a middle school in central NY

9) What are you eating for dinner tomorrow?: I dunno...

10) Best male singer?: Hmm... Michael Crawford.
11) Female?: Hayley Westenra

12 & 13) Worst?: *shrugs* can't think of anyone in the genre that I've heard that I've really disliked. . . though, there's a guy in the group Nightwish, who sings the male part in the Theme from Phantom of the Opera, who I think, should be shot for what he did to that song, the girl is good, he is not.

14) What do you think is an appropriate age to begin training classically, and what age (if singer has started "early") is an appropriate age to begin performing?
One of my friends started voice lessons at age four... however, she didn't damage her voice at all, which is good. I think a safe age is around twelve or thirteen.

15) Do you notice that aspects of your environment, diet, lifestyle, or mood affect your singing? If I get really stressed out, I lose my voice. I found that out the hard way.

16) As singers, we are reproducing words and music often hundreds of years old. How does that make you feel when you're standing up in front of an audience or microphone and such a responsibility is resting on your shoulders?: Lmao, I tense up! However, I love the feeling of singing... it's such a great rush and it makes me proud of myself for being able to keep people interested in my voice.

17) What is the worst song you've ever been made to sing or have done yourself that you can't believe that you attempted to do?: ... I had to sing "Maybe" from Annie as an audition song. It *killed* me because I a lot of problems with the high notes.

18) What's the hardest technical issue you've had to work through?: Expanding my range. It's no fun having a low range when all the pretty songs are for sopranos. That, and sightreading. I can't read music and I've been trying to learn for two years.

19) If opera suddenly stopped, what other kind of music would you like to sing?: ^^' Lol, broadway. I love all sorts of music. I listen to anything from Linkin Park to Charlotte Church (although I think her voice isn't very good now).

20) What is the worst stage experience you have ever had, and your best?: :Losing my voice three days before the talent show. It was horrible... I worked so hard and I got sick because I was worrying so much...

Best-- NYSSMA last Saturday. I was losing my voice on Friday but my voice got well enough for me to sing and I managed to get a 24/28. ^__^ I'm proud of that.

Singer de la metal [05 May 2004|09:17pm]

[ mood | amused ]

Hello everyone,
I'm Kym and I'm 16 years old. I've been singing since I was 3 or 4. I have a soprano 1 to tenor 2 range and continue studying voice tecniques on my own. I took voice lessons for 3 years. Sadly, my favorite teacher has moved to New York City to persue his opera career. I sing many different styles and genres. I have opera, musical theatre, and classical voice training. I also sing various types of metal. You know that screamy stuff? Yes, I can do those fun 'death metal' screams. I love the stylings of Tarja Tururen from Nightwish and Amy Lee from Evanescence. Both have amazing ranges.
Last month, I completed my high schools run of "Fiddler on The Roof". Quite an amazing musical. I was very not excited about it, but by the end of the run, I was crushed. I loved it so much!
I write my own music and lyrics. I never had piano lessons but have learned many popular songs by ear. Thanks to mein pater, I have a natural musical talent. I by no means am 'amazing' (as a girl from my church says about herself), but I believe that my voice is somewhat standable!! :)
I hope to ~hear~ from most of you soon.

Heya guys, friendly mod here. Sorry this comms been kinda dead. We have a whopping 12 members, though! Woo! Keep it up, recruit and love!

Did anyone else have a song filled holiday?
I got the several CD's including La Boheme, Cecilia Bartoli's 17th century Italian songs, and Ultimate Broadway, so i'm singing-set for awhile, at least till I memorize all the songs and need further vocal nourishment.

I also got addicted to a new musical out called Wicked that's on Broadway right now. I was originally turned away b/c I heard it was pop-ish, but it's just so cute, and Kristen Chenoweth has the cutest voice eveer.

Anyhow! Post! Sing! Be joyous!
